Eiko is our Ceremonial Reserve matcha, the finest in the Wabi range. It's named after Sakura's mother, Eiko, a tea ceremony sensei in Japan. Made from first-harvest spring leaves from Uji and slowly stone-milled to a silky powder, it whisks into a deep green, velvety bowl with rich umami, natural sweetness and a clean, lingering finish.

The story behind Eiko

Sakura grew up in Japan watching her mother prepare tea for her students. Every Wabi matcha is chosen with that standard in mind, and Eiko is the one we would serve in her tea room. It's a matcha for slowing down: a few quiet minutes, one bowl, fully present.

How to prepare

Traditional (usucha)

Sift 2g (1 level teaspoon, or 2 bamboo scoops) into a bowl. Add 70ml of water at 75–80°C, never boiling. Whisk briskly in an M or W motion for 15–20 seconds until a fine, creamy froth forms. Drink straight away.

Matcha latte

Eiko is made to be enjoyed with water, but it also makes an exceptional latte. Whisk 2g with 30–40ml of hot water until smooth, then top with 150–200ml of warm milk.

Storage

Matcha is sensitive to light, heat, air and moisture. Reseal tightly after each use, keep it in a cool, dark cupboard, and enjoy within 6–8 weeks of opening for the best colour and flavour.

What makes Eiko different from your other ceremonial matcha?

Eiko comes from our most carefully selected first-harvest leaves, giving the deepest umami and sweetest finish in our range. For a smooth everyday ceremonial matcha at a lower price, try Tsubaki. For certified organic, try Haru.

How much caffeine is in a serving?

About 50–70mg per 2g serve, generally less than a typical brewed coffee. The L-theanine in matcha gives a calmer, steadier lift.

Do I need a bamboo whisk?

For a matcha of this quality, yes. A bamboo whisk (chasen) creates the fine, creamy froth that brings out Eiko's sweetness and texture.
